As experts in stainless steel, we know that the different alloys have special properties, making each of them ideally suited to particular fields of application. We are happy to pass on our knowledge of stainless steel, and here we would like to inform you about stainless steel 1.4541. What are the outstanding properties of this steel? Why is it so popular with our customers?
Don't worry - we will not deal only with theory such as the chemical composition. Far more important to us is telling you where and how you can use this steel. And if steel 1.4541 is the right choice for you, we will also reveal at the end how you can order it made to measure from us.
The properties of steel 1.4541
This is a chromium-nickel steel belonging to the group of austenitic steels. In addition to the designation 1.4541, it is also known under the material designation X6CrNiTi18-10 and the AISI code 321.
The alloy contains 17 to 19% chromium and 9 to 12% nickel. In addition, steel 1.4541 contains titanium as an additional stabiliser, which binds the carbon.
Its outstanding material properties include good corrosion resistance, attributed to this metal in environments with low concentrations of hydrochloric, saline and nitric acid.
Thanks to its properties, 1.4541 is suitable for machining, cold forming, cold heading, and open-die and closed-die forging. It is not, however, suitable for free-machining on automatic lathes.
Where is 1.4541 stainless steel used?
It is found particularly frequently in the food industry, thanks to its resistance to acids in low concentrations. Vessels and surfaces made of this material can be cleaned efficiently and thoroughly with cleaners based on hydrochloric or saline acid.
For the same reason, tanks and apparatus are often manufactured from this alloy. The chemical industry also likes to use steel 1.4541 for the transport of raw materials and as a material for production plants.
How can 1.4541 be processed?
Its weldability can be rated as very good, and you are not restricted to a single process: particularly strong results are achieved with TIG, MAG and arc welding. Submerged arc and laser beam welding are also suitable for steel 1.4541.
Because this alloy contains titanium, no intergranular corrosion occurs and no post-weld heat treatment is required. As its melting point is lower than that of unalloyed steel, heat input must be monitored during welding. For the same reason, the heat resistance of steel 1.4541 is lower than that of especially heat-resistant stainless grades.
Not a material for the DIY store
Like almost all stainless steels, 1.4541 is a very specialised material that is only available from specialist dealers. It is simply requested too rarely in DIY stores for retailers to keep it in stock.
This is also because it is quite difficult for hobbyists to cut stainless steel sheets precisely to the desired dimensions. DIY stores primarily cater to people who build and design themselves. To obtain sheets of steel 1.4541 locally, you can contact metal fabrication companies - but you should be aware that they have little interest in smaller orders from private individuals.
Stainless steel V2A / V4A: what is the difference?
In everyday life you mostly encounter stainless steel in the V2A version. It is corrosion-resistant and thus meets the requirements of many applications - whether as sheet or as a screw. What can harm V2A stainless steel is chloride-containing substances.
By adding around 2% molybdenum, you obtain a V4A stainless steel. This is considerably more resistant to corrosion in chloride-containing media, which broadens the range of applications. In shipbuilding in particular, but also in the food industry, the V4A version is therefore predominantly used.
Our offer is aimed at every customer
Having worked with stainless steel - including stainless steel 1.4541 - for decades, we decided some years ago to make our offer accessible to all customers. The prerequisite was that we put all workflows in our production facility to the test and exploited every potential for optimisation.
Of course we too are pleased about larger orders that keep our production busy for longer. But we can also handle small individual orders from private customers quickly and economically. We have set ourselves the goal of manufacturing and dispatching every order within 48 hours of receipt - a goal we have achieved almost without exception so far.
We are not an anonymous online retailer
We recognised the opportunities of the internet as a sales platform. But we did not want to become yet another online shop where you order anonymously. We therefore decided to leave our ordering process unchanged. For you, this means placing your order by telephone with our sales staff - which has several advantages for you.
We know how specialised the different stainless steel alloys are. To guarantee you make the right choice, we attach great importance to personal advice. With just a few questions, our experienced staff can determine whether steel 1.4541 is the right solution for you or whether you would be better served by stainless steel 1.4404 or 1.4841.
We can also advise you quickly and reliably on material thickness. We stock both very thin sheets suitable for cladding and sturdy sheets you can turn into the shelf of a heavy-duty rack.
With us, you get service from a single source
So that you do not have to carry out any further work steps yourself apart from fastening the sheet, we offer you an all-round package. We not only have machines for cutting: for forming into bent sheets or stainless steel angles, machines in various sizes are available. This allows us to guarantee that you always receive a perfectly straight edge - important from both a structural and a visual point of view.
We are also happy to take care of the surface finish, using various dry-grinding processes. Whether you want a matt or a ground surface - we will gladly take care of the surface treatment for you.
Simply give us a call without obligation and have a sheet of stainless steel 1.4541 calculated for you. It only takes a few minutes, and you can place your order immediately afterwards. At the same time, you will have made sure that the sheet you want is actually suitable for its intended location. And because you only have to wait a few days for our delivery, your project will not come to a standstill - you can use the time to think about the fastening method.
