What defines stainless steel 1.4762 and how can I order it? We summarise its fields of application and the ordering process.

Here we would like to take a closer look at stainless steel 1.4762. It is very popular with our customers, as it is particularly well suited to certain fields of application. To help you judge whether a 1.4762 sheet is the right choice for you, we will inform you about its material properties.

What is stainless steel 1.4762 composed of?

Since the various alloys essentially differ only in their composition, let us first look at what 1.4762 consists of. It is a ferritic chromium steel with a chromium content of 23.0 to 26.0%. It also contains between 1.2 and 1.7% aluminium. Carbon may account for a maximum of 0.12%, manganese for 1.0%. Silicon must have a share of at least 0.7% and at most 1.4%. Phosphorus and sulphur are present in small amounts at a maximum of 0.04% and 0.015% respectively.

What distinguishes 1.4762 sheet?

It is a heat-resistant steel with outstanding resistance to sulphurous gases. This material is also resistant to sulphurous reducing gases. Its scaling resistance is maintained up to a temperature of 1,150 degrees Celsius.

Compared with heat-resistant austenitic steels, 1.4762 offers design advantages: it has higher thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion than those steels. It is also more tolerant of fluctuating temperatures, even in the range beyond 650 degrees Celsius.

However, its mechanical properties at high temperatures are not as good. This is why it is only used where mechanical stress is relatively low.

Very good weldability

For further processing it is a decisive advantage that sheet 1.4762 has very good weldability. It can be welded with all common welding processes: TIG, MAG, arc or submerged arc welding all deliver good, reliable results.

In practice, however, workpieces thicker than 3 mm must be preheated; the ideal temperature range is between 200 and 300 degrees Celsius. Thinner workpieces do not need preheating, as they heat up quickly during welding. As regards forming, bear in mind that this stainless steel is only suitable to a limited extent. Here too, workpieces thicker than 3 mm must be preheated to between 200 and 300 degrees Celsius before processing.

Fields of application for stainless steel 1.4762

This steel is used in many places. It is very popular for furnace construction in the high-temperature range. Many parts in the chain industry and in mechanical engineering are also made of this material, because they can be used for a long time. The same applies to furnace construction, where mechanical stress is relatively low compared with thermal stress.

Examples of items made from 1.4762 include gas turbines, thermal protection tubes, exhaust valves and kilns. Soot blowers, air preheaters and heat exchangers are also frequently made from it.

A special material

As 1.4762 is made for special applications, it is a material that is not offered everywhere. This is of course also because every customer needs a sheet in specific dimensions - and cutting stainless steel is not a task an inexperienced craftsman can manage. For DIY stores and metal dealers, it is therefore not worthwhile stocking various stainless alloys such as stainless steel 1.4762: customer demand is too low.

So that you can continue your project requiring this special sheet, you have two options. You can contact a metalworking company - but they tend to prefer large or at least regular orders, so expect them to take their time preparing a quotation.
