What exactly is stainless steel flat bar?
As the name suggests, stainless steel flat bar is a flat-rolled piece of stainless steel. To be designated flat bar, it must meet the specifications of the European standard EN 10058. The formerly common German term "Flacheisen" (flat iron) is used less often today but is still valid.
Flat bar is a so-called semi-finished product, because it is very rarely used in the form in which it was manufactured. It is a standardised raw material used mainly in the processing industry.
To be classified as flat bar, the following dimensions must be observed: the width must be between 10 and 150 mm, and the thickness may range between 5 mm and 20 mm. Flat bar is counted among the long products and is generally produced in bar form.
What is flat bar used for?
The main buyer of flat bar is the processing industry, where it is used as a semi-finished product, precursor or blank for manufacturing various products. One example is the automotive industry, which produces bodywork from this steel.
Many everyday products are made from this steel - tables, chairs and bicycle stands, for example. Balcony and stair railings are also regularly made of flat bar rather than cast iron.
The construction industry would also be inconceivable without flat bar: steel structures made of flat bar are used to build large warehouses and factories. In the food industry too, production plants and transport containers are made from flat bar. Depending on the environment in which they are used, V2A or V4A flat bar is also employed.
How can flat bar be processed further?
As with almost all other types of steel, a wide range of processes is available to you for the further processing of stainless steel flat bar. Should you need it in a particular shape, it can be cut accordingly. Given the material thickness of stainless flat bar, however, you should use professional machines for this or leave the cutting to a professional.
Forming flat bar is also possible: besides angles or L-profiles, other profiles are possible too. That is important whenever you need a precisely fitting part for your project. For an optimum result, this work step should be carried out with a machine designed for it. For installing stainless steel flat bar, various methods are available: you can drill holes in the workpiece and then fix it with screws. Usually, however, solid flat bar parts are welded on. Depending on the alloy your workpiece is made of, you can use the common welding processes. Installation by brazing, on the other hand, is not recommended, because that method is better suited to finer joints that are not subject to such heavy loads.
Where can you buy flat bar?
In principle, every metalworking company should be able to sell you flat bar workpieces - probably including V4A or V2A flat bar. However, as a smaller customer you are often not the target group of such companies: they concentrate on corporate customers who place either larger quantities or at least regular orders.
So it can happen that you are not served obligingly and that they take their time with the quotation or the projected delivery date. But if you do not want to wait long, there is an alternative: you can also order made-to-measure stainless steel flat bar products online and have them conveniently sent to your home.

Individual sheets instead of standard sizes
Our large warehouse holds only raw sheets, which we process to customer order - we do not keep finished products in stock. Every sheet and every stainless steel flat bar product is produced to the customer's specifications. That does not mean, however, that you have to wait long for your order.
We quote you the individually calculated price during the consultation itself. If you place an order with us, it is generally produced and handed over for dispatch within 48 hours. So you only have to wait a few days until you receive a perfectly cut and processed product to your specifications. We do not leave you much time, then, to think about how you want to install our workpiece.
