Flat Steel from ESC Burg

Flat steel is an important and versatile material for many projects. ESC Burg is your reliable partner for flat steel and other made-to-measure products!

Flat steel is an important material for many projects and is used, for example, in building stair railings and furniture. It is a representative of the group of unalloyed structural steels and is used in many ways.

You will learn from us what defines flat steel and how it can be worked. We also want to tell you where you can buy this building material - and made-to-measure flat steel in particular. Naturally, we at ESC Burg also stock this versatile product.

What is meant by flat steel?

Viewed soberly, flat steel is a steel product made from a larger piece of steel by hot rolling. Depending on how thick the end product is, it is classified into one of three groups:

  • Sheet: if the width exceeds 300 mm and the material thickness is at most 5 mm, one speaks of sheet.
  • Flat steel: 150 mm is the upper limit for width; the thickness must exceed 5 mm.
  • Strip steel: this is a flat steel that is coiled, allowing strip steel to be produced and transported in great lengths.

The material number under which flat steel is sold is 1.0038. This makes clear that there is a standard for this material and that you can be sure of the properties of flat bar.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of flat steel?

The advantages of flat steel lie in its workability. Since the alloy consists essentially of iron, flat steel is very resilient - especially under load in the direction in which the rollers ran.

Flat steel is suitable for machining, forging and welding. Forming is possible both cold and hot, depending on material thickness.

Because it is an unalloyed steel, it is primarily suited to indoor use. If you want to use flat steel in an environment that may be damp, you must provide corrosion protection in the form of a paint coating.

Where is flat steel used?

It is an important product for further processing and is used both as a semi-finished product and as a starting product for manufacturing other steel products. If flat strip steel is used as a semi-finished product, it must already be brought to the dimensions required for use - hence made-to-measure flat steel.

Flat steel used as a starting product is bought in the standardised sizes from industrial production and then adapted on site. That is the case, for example, when profiles are to be made to a customer's specification: several work steps - cutting, forming and welding - are required up to the finished product.

This is what flat steel is needed for

As we have already indicated, flat strip steel is contained in many steel products. Looking at the hobby and trade sector, chairs, table frames and bicycle stands are typical examples of its use - but it is also used for stair railings, shelving and garden gates.

In industry, flat steels are used for building vehicle bodies, building structures and roof structures. Factory buildings, warehouses and supermarkets are almost always built with substantial parts made of flat steel. Tin cans and beverage cans are also partly made from flat steel and are an indispensable part of everyday life.

Where can you buy flat bar?

If you also want to rely on the resilience and easy workability of flat steel for your project, you will certainly be interested in where you can buy flat bar. Since it is a standard product for trade and industry, availability is generally good. But that does not mean you will find it easy to buy made-to-measure flat steel - the challenge lies precisely in the individual dimensions.

Industry, as the main buyer of flat bar, processes it in its own production plants and has no need to order made-to-measure flat steel. As a private individual who does not want to take on the challenge of an exact metal cut yourself, there are not many alternatives. You can obtain a quotation from a local metalworking company - but they will probably not be falling over themselves for a relatively small order from a private individual.

Order flat steel from the professionals

Even if it may surprise you at first, there is a very convenient way to buy flat bar and thus obtain made-to-measure flat steel. ESC Burg has specialised in producing made-to-measure sheets to customer order. Thanks to efficient processes from order to delivery, we can therefore offer our service even for orders with a small volume.

We make no distinction in our service between private and corporate customers. Every customer receives free advice from us and an individually calculated price. We could not work any other way, because we do not produce products for stock but always work to customer order only.

Advice is the first step

If we produce individual orders for our customers, we also want to make sure nothing goes wrong. That is why we accept orders exclusively in direct contact with our sales team. With just a few questions, we can clarify which alloy is optimal for your project and which material thickness is the right one. It makes a big difference whether you are looking for a new floor plate for a trailer or need sheets for model making.

Our experienced colleagues can also quote you the costs for made-to-measure flat steel immediately. Nobody has to wait for a quotation to be drawn up with us.

Professional execution is guaranteed

We use exclusively machines that enable us to work exactly to customer specifications - with millimetre precision. Through constant investment, we are always at the state of the art and can draw on various processes for cutting and surface treatment.

As a rule, less than 48 hours pass from receipt of order to dispatch of a delivery.
