Stainless Steel 1.4571 Tensile Strength | Data Summarised

We inform you about the composition of stainless steel 1.4571, explain where and why it is used and how you can order it from us.

If you want to use a stainless steel characterised by high tensile strength, stainless steel 1.4571 is a very good choice. Many of our customers choose this material because of its properties, particularly with regard to processing.

Here we would like to introduce another stainless grade that we can cut to size and process for our customers. We will focus in particular on the possible uses of stainless steel 1.4571 - and of course we will also reveal how you can order this stainless steel from us.

What is stainless steel 1.4571?

This alloy is a corrosion-resistant austenitic steel. According to the guide analysis, its composition consists of a maximum of 0.08% carbon, no more than 1.0% silicon and a maximum of 2.0% manganese. The upper limit for phosphorus is 0.045% and for sulphur 0.015%. The main constituents are chromium with a share of 16.5-18.5% and nickel with 10.5-13.5%.

It is therefore also referred to as a chromium-nickel steel. Molybdenum accounts for 2.0-2.5%, while the titanium content corresponds to 5 times the carbon content, but at most 0.7%.

Which properties distinguish this material?

A key characteristic is its very good corrosion resistance, comparable to that of grade 1.4404. Corrosion resistance is very good especially in natural waters containing only medium concentrations of chlorides, nitric acid, salt or organic acids. On contact with seawater or common salt, however, there is a risk of pitting despite the increased molybdenum content. The titanium content provides resistance to intergranular corrosion, which is maintained even during welding and at sustained temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celsius.

Compared with other alloys, the mechanical properties of stainless steel 1.4571 are in the medium range. The tensile strength of 1.4571 in the solution-annealed condition is 500-700 N/mm². 1.4571 can be used up to a temperature of 550 degrees Celsius.

How is stainless steel 1.4571 used?

In practice, 1.4571 has proven itself above all as a material for components and apparatus, thanks to its corrosion resistance. Sectors in which this stainless steel is widely used are the chemical industry and the food sector. The stainless steel meets the high requirements for the storage and transport of food, beverages and chemicals, which is why many transport containers are made of stainless steel 1.4571. The pipework in tanker vehicles is also often made of this stainless steel.

Another sector that makes extensive use of 1.4571 is the textile industry, where plants for the production of cellulose and synthetic fibres are made from this material. The construction industry is also fond of this steel: windows, doors and fittings are made from it. And the medical sector also takes advantage of the stainless steel's properties, building apparatus and transport vessels from 1.4571. This is also due to the fact that this material is suitable for pressure vessels in accordance with pressure vessel standard DIN EN 10272.

Processing options

Like most other stainless steels, 1.4571 can be processed in many ways. It is particularly well suited to forging, which is possible in the temperature range between 900 and 1,200 degrees Celsius; cooling should take place in air. Solution annealing with subsequent quenching in air or water can be carried out at temperatures between 1,020 and 1,120 degrees Celsius. Soft annealing is not recommended for this material.

1.4571 is not so well suited to machining. If you nevertheless want to machine it, you should definitely use carbide or HSS tools, as the titanium content of stainless steel 1.4571 increases tool wear.

Welding is very readily possible with all common welding processes. However, care must be taken with the temperature, as austenitic steel tends to crack if the heat input is too high. Welding must therefore be carried out in thin passes, with an interpass temperature of no more than 200 degrees Celsius. 1.4571 is resistant to intergranular corrosion even in the welded condition. If scale and temper colours form during welding, they can be removed mechanically or chemically.

1.4571 tensile strength: stable even under heavy loads

One material property stands out: the tensile strength of 1.4571. This is one of the most important strength values of metals. The tensile strength of 1.4571 is determined through several tests with different forces and always refers to a cross-section of the material. The unit for tensile strength is N/mm² or MPa.

Tensile strength indicates the force at which a material would tear. It can thus be used to assess the mechanical load at which the various steel types become unusable. Stainless steel 1.4571 remains dimensionally stable even under heavy mechanical loads and is clearly superior to plain steel.

The tensile strength of 1.4571 lies in the range of 500-700 N/mm². Conventional structural steel, by comparison, only achieves a value between 300 and 590 N/mm². Cast iron even reaches tensile strength values of just 100 to 350 N/mm². Only high-alloy steels achieve higher values than 1.4571, with figures between 1,100 and 1,300 N/mm².

If you want to use stainless steel 1.4571, you initially face two challenges. The first is finding a supplier who can deliver this stainless steel in the desired thickness. The second is bringing the sheet to the dimensions you need - not at all easy, as you probably lack both the tools and the experience for cutting stainless steel.
