1.4547 data sheet: what distinguishes this material?
Also known under the designation 254 SMO, stainless steel 1.4547 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel. 1.4547 is highly resistant to pitting, crevice and surface corrosion. Its PREN value (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number), which indicates the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, is 42.5. Like all stainless steels with a PREN value greater than 32, it is therefore considered suitable for seawater.
Looking at the composition of 1.4547, chromium stands out with the largest share at between 19.5 and 20.5%, closely followed by nickel (17.5 to 18.5%) and molybdenum (6.0 to 7.0%). Carbon (0.02%), silicon (0.7%), phosphorus (0.03%) and sulphur (0.01%) are each present only in very low concentrations. An upper limit of 1.0% is defined for manganese. Nitrogen accounts for between 0.18% and 0.25%, while copper is present at 0.5% to 1.0%.
How can 1.4547 be processed?
The mechanical properties of stainless steel 1.4547 are generally rated as good. This is due to its high molybdenum content and the addition of nitrogen. The material cannot be hardened by heat treatment; its strength can only be increased by work-hardening deformation.
254 SMO can be processed with all common welding processes. When welding, it is advisable to keep heat penetration into the material as low as possible. When machining, a low cutting speed and a sufficient depth of cut must be observed, as stainless steel 1.4547 tends to work-harden during machining.
Where is 1.4547 used?
Where 254 SMO is preferably used naturally follows from its material properties. Its resistance to pitting, crevice and surface corrosion stands out, as does its resistance to seawater. Stainless steel 1.4547 is accordingly used wherever other materials would corrode due to the environment.
Various sectors and industries rely on 1.4547 for production plants and products. Transport containers in particular are often made from this very robust material, as even very aggressive substances can be stored in them. For the chemical and petrochemical sectors, 1.4547 is indispensable. There are also numerous components in food production and mechanical engineering that are made from 254 SMO for long-term use.
The material is absolutely indispensable in shipbuilding, however. Stainless steel parts exposed to both seawater and very salty air are in most cases made of 1.4547. The same naturally applies to all offshore installations for oil and gas production, as well as to wind farms built out at sea. Pipework in seawater swimming pools and seawater desalination plants is particularly often made of stainless steel 1.4547.
A special material for many applications
Because its composition according to the 1.4547 data sheet makes it a stainless steel with outstanding corrosion resistance, this alloy is in high demand. That does not mean, however, that it can easily be purchased anywhere. Stainless steel sheets are still a product for specialist dealers and not available locally in DIY stores. You may already have had this experience when trying to buy 1.4841 or stainless steel 1.4713.
If you want to use stainless steel 1.4547 for your project, you essentially have two options, which we would like to present to you. You can, of course, turn to a metalworking company in your region - although as a private customer with a small order volume, you are not the customer they are waiting for, so expect delays with your order.
