Today we turn to another stainless steel alloy that many of our customers like to order from us. So today you will learn everything you need to know about stainless steel 1.4539, also known under the name Acidur 4539. How is it composed? Which material properties distinguish it?

As always, we try to keep the "textbook" but necessary part as short as possible. It matters for you nonetheless, because it will help you choose the right metal for your project. The composition of 1.4539

Stainless steel 1.4539 is a corrosion-resistant superaustenitic steel. It consists essentially of nickel (23.0 to 28.0%) and chromium (19.0 to 23.0%). Further elementary constituents responsible for its material properties are molybdenum (4.0 to 5.0%) and copper (1.2 to 2.0%). The carbon content may be a maximum of 0.02%. Low upper limits also apply to phosphorus (0.03%) and sulphur (0.01%).

The nitrogen content may be a maximum of 0.15%, while manganese is tolerated up to a concentration of 2.0%. Silicon is present with a share of up to 0.7%.

Material properties of stainless steel 1.4539

An outstanding property of stainless steel 1.4539 is its seawater resistance. Its corrosion resistance is excellent overall. The mechanical properties are generally described as good. Its forgeability, however, is only medium compared with other alloys - the same applies to the machinability of 1.4539.

At an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, the 1.4539 material group has the following properties: the density is 8.0 kg/dm³, the electrical resistivity is 1.0 ohm mm²/m, the thermal conductivity is 12 W/m K and the specific heat capacity 450 J/kg K. Magnetisability at room temperature is low. Stainless steel 1.4539 can be used without problems at temperatures between -60 and 400 degrees Celsius.

In terms of mechanical properties, 1.4539 achieves the following values: hardness peaks at 230 HB, tensile strength ranges between 530 and 730 N/mm², the proof strength is above 230 N/mm², elongation is above 30% and the modulus of elasticity reaches 195 kN/mm².

What you need to consider during processing

If you want to use stainless steel sheets, various processing methods come into question. 1.4539 is suitable for cold forming, although cold heading is not common. For machining, this alloy is only moderately suitable. It can be polished, and open-die and closed-die forging are possible. When forging, work must be carried out in a temperature range between 950 and 1,180 degrees Celsius, with cooling in air or water.

When it comes to assembling or joining workpieces, you will probably opt for welding. The good news is that welding 1.4539 is straightforward thanks to its good characteristics - certainly one of the reasons why stainless steel 1.4539 is used so often and in so many ways. You can use all common welding processes for assembly, although welding without filler metal is not advisable. In principle, you can also resort to brazing or adhesive bonding of stainless steel for assembly.

Where 1.4539 is used

Due to its seawater resistance, sheets of 1.4539 are popular on ships and are therefore widely used in shipbuilding. Various workpieces made of 1.4539 sheet are also used in the construction of offshore wind turbines. In apparatus engineering, 1.4539 is likewise favoured for its corrosion resistance.

Further fields of application are the pharmaceutical industry, the pulp industry and the construction industry. Since it is a particularly robust stainless steel that is also very easy to clean, numerous vessels and production facilities in the chemical and petrochemical sectors are made from this alloy.

Sources of supply for this material

Although this really is a very common alloy, you cannot get sheets of 1.4539 at the DIY store. And even if you could, it would only help you partially, because you definitely cannot get cutting done there - meaning you would have to get active yourself at home. Depending on how heavy the sheet you have selected is, cutting stainless steel can be quite a challenge.

Local contacts can be metalworking companies, although they are primarily aimed at business customers with larger or recurring orders. You may therefore have to wait a little longer there for a made-to-measure sheet of stainless steel 1.4539.
